what?
what are you looking at?
before you ask, yes we are twins.
everybody asks everywhere we go!
did you know that we cry in sync? i mean, exactly at the same time? it's like surround sound.
the way that people tell us apart is that i (cate) am smaller.
and i (lucy) have way more hair.
people like to ask if we are identical, the answer is we don't know.
when we were in my mommy's tummy we shared one placenta, which can be an indicator of identical twins. but it can also mean that we are fraternal, and our placentas simply fused.
the only way to know for sure is a DNA test.
sometimes we look EXACTLY alike,
sometimes we look nothing alike.
it's hard to tell because i (cate) am SO much smaller.
we have the same clefts in our chins,
the same angel's kisses (birthmarks) above the same eye.
we have the same ears and belly buttons that look like they are going to be outies.
we don't really like to snuggle yet. we suck on eachother's noses and heads and claw eachother (spazzy arm movements+sharp baby fingernails aka talons).
we eat at the same time, pause eating at the same time, and even poop at the same time!!
when one of us wakes up from a nap, the other always stirs.
i (lucy) like to make the dr.evil pinky
ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARSSSSSSSSS!!!
i also look EXACTLY...i mean exactly like harper looked as a newborn.
(evil finger tap)
i (cate) look a lot like daddy. he even jokes that i have his hairline. ehehheheheh!
we love it here in the big world,
even though our sister sadie keeps aggresively trying to shove binkies in our mouths, and has a bad habit of doing this while we are trying to have a peaceful meal:
and we love our biggest sister harper, too.
life is good.
thanks nonna for the adorable pajamas and thanks to auntie shara for the GORGEOUS quilt!!
p.s. did you hear about pantone's color of the year for 2011?
pink. we agree with that choice here at the howell household!!!
xoxo,
s,h,s,c,and l

Enjoy your time with them at this age (even thought it is a blur) because it goes by so fast.

They are AMAZING!
Posted by: karen Lee | 12/10/2010 at 09:45 AM
In that very first picture, they totally do look identical. and I think once cate catches up to lucy in size they will too and they will both look more like Harper...but ya never know cause they change sooo much when they're this tiny and I love that...every day it seems each photo can be a little bit different. Ok, I totally said Cate has Jimmy's hairline when I saw the first picture and you started describing each baby and then burst out laughing when you said it too!!! I scared the cat right off my bed. lol They are simply beautiful Steph. I don't know how you get anything else done all day...I'd just sit and stare at them for hours... :)

Posted by: Jessica | 12/10/2010 at 10:05 AM
they are BOTH beautiful, but easy to tell apart at this point because of the size and hair! I think once cate catches up with her sister, they are going to be hard to tell apart!!!! adorable photos stephanie!

What a great update! I had to laugh....we get the same thing ALL the time: "Are they twins??" I really don't get that question. I mean, yes, mine are boy and girl, but they are pretty much the same size. Do you think I just had two babies at separate times??!! Sometimes I get really tempted to say, "No, they're a month apart". And just see what people say ;) The second most popular question is, "Oooh...are you gonna have more??" Really? Why is that so fascinating to ask?? Again, I get tempted to say, "Oh yes, we're going to try for twins again!" Heehee....people should know not to mess w/ moms of newborn twins who are SEVERLY sleep deprived :D
Posted by: Sarah Savage | 12/10/2010 at 10:23 AM
eeeks! even though i have a tiny 5 week old (ok, she's a chunk and nurses ALL THE TIME!) those pics make my tied up ovaries HURT SO BADLY!!!!!

Posted by: Shara | 12/10/2010 at 11:01 AM
They are adorable! Congrats and prayers to you, take care of yourself mama, I know how insanely hard it is. I have twins and 2 years later had another. 3 girls for me! I was told they didnt know about mine being fraternal or not but as they grew it was VERY obvious they are fraternal. One is 4 inches taller than the other and one of mine has and angel kiss above her eyebrow. Thats how we told them apart when they were newborns they were exactly alike then. Again ADORABLE!

Your post is totally making me giggle. I always think it is SO funny when people say are they twins?
Posted by: Amy | 12/10/2010 at 01:37 PM
So glad you let the twins blog! It's nice to ear life from the kiddies point! They are simply adorable and I love the funny faces they make...you must sit with your camera poised for the quick face changes that they make! I know I would want to sit and stare at them all day too! (I am sure you get more done than that but I know how I am and would have nothing else to show for my day except all the pictures I took!) Thanks again for sharing! Could your blog possibly be hijacked soon by the oldest of this sweet bunch of girls.....(hint!)...?!
Posted by: Tammy Graves | 12/10/2010 at 02:14 PM
I loved this post. I think is soo good you try to know everyone of them not just as "the twins" but like 2 different girls (and yes, twins).
By the way, I have laughed A LOT with the video about Harper talking with her "call phone" she is hilarious and, as you have said, has a very strong personality! (and lovely)
I think I said this in another post but congratulations Stephanie, you have a lovely family!
Posted by: Bea Monforte | 12/10/2010 at 02:15 PM
You have such a beautiful family. I think that's why I'm so addicted to your blog. Your two new lovelies are just wonderful. Thanks for sharing them.
Posted by: Cathie | 12/10/2010 at 02:23 PM
No expert on twins here, but I love hearing about how your daughters do things at the exact same moment. While the crying at the same moment has to be a thrill, isn't it interesting how they are hardwired? I cannot imagine children of yours developing their own delightful personalities, twins or no. Thanks for a fun post.
Posted by: Ann | 12/10/2010 at 03:10 PM
They are so cute! I can't believe the size difference - so adorable!!! It sounds like you are having so much fun with the kids!
Posted by: Stacey | 12/10/2010 at 03:13 PM
thankyou Cate and Lucy for answering some of these important questions that I know I was definitely wanting to know the answers to! We agree that pink is a great colour choice in our house too ;)

OK Stephanie... I can't resist anymore. I never post on blogs, EVER. I can't remember how I stumbled across your blog, but I have followed for months now and I want to let you know how much joy you have given me. Your family and your writing is beautiful and I laugh and cry at many of your posts and pictures. After today's post I just couldn't refrain any longer from thanking you. You make me love my own children even more just by bringing your own joy of your children into words and pictures. Thank you so much and may your family always be blessed with happiness and health.

You absolutely rock Stephanie (and girls, oh J, you are cool too.
I am excited to see that you had a pantone comment. I told several people yesterday I was excited they announced their color of the year and NO ONE knew the word pantone. "who is that?"
LOL, geez.
For the record, I think the twins look identical, and I have seen a lot of Harper in them as well.

Pretty in Pink! x 2! I was adoring the quilt along with the babies. From out here via pictures, little Cate looks just like Harper! They're beautiful. I hope you are feeling well.
Posted by: bluemoon | 12/11/2010 at 12:32 AM
Just Beautiful!!! They look alot alike at the moment, it will be interesting to see how much more that might be once Cate catches up in size to Lucy! You and J do have the most beautiful babies together and make me very broody! :)

How beautiful your baby girls are! Love all the ttaits you share!
Posted by: Kathy Martin | 12/11/2010 at 07:00 AM
LOVE this post. Too cute from the girls perspective:) I laughed out loud at the "in stereo" comment. My sis and I are twins and we STILL do it all the time; say the exact same thing at the exact same time. It's our "in stereo" thing;) I think it's really funny when someonen asks one of us when our birthday is, then asks the other...uh...OK...LOL. Have a great day:)

People come out of the woodwork to ooh and aaah over twins. I guess we make a commotion just coming in the door with the double stroller and all. And people always asked me if my twins were identical. I'd explain that they were a boy and a girl, and they'd say, "Yes, but are they identical?" The first few times it happened I would explain why they couldn't be "identical" but then I gave up and I'd just say no, no, they aren't identical :-)
For what it's worth, my girlfriend's identical twins did not look alike as babies. Now I can't tell them apart!
Posted by: Angela | 12/12/2010 at 07:42 AM
Angela, ditto the boy/girl identical twins questions and answers. I would sometimes say yes, and sometimes say no. Just to keep things interesting.
Posted by: Brooke | 12/13/2010 at 03:16 PM
I'm in love with your babies, all four of them :) Congratulations and I'm glad Lucy and Cate are here, safe and healthy. Loved Harper's phone conversation too, LOL
