What I'm Reading | January 2015 Edition

TGIF y'all!

Welcome to the January Edition of "What I'm Reading". One of my personal goals for this year is to get better about tracking EVERYTHING I read on Goodreads.

I also joined the Goodreads 2015 Reading Challenge. J says I sold myself short going for only 50 books, considering I've read already read four so far in January. HA!

 

{What I've Read Recently}

 

1. Station Eleven // I devoured this one and it stuck with me. I still think about it often. To me- that's the hallmark of a great book. It's a dystopian novel and I always love those. But this one just also has a wonderfully tender side too. I read a review somewhere that said that this book makes you "miss and long for the world you are living in right now" or something like that and I agree.

 

2.The Book of Unknown Americans // This book really touched my heart. I love that it was written by a fellow papercrafter, I love that it gave me insight into the life of an immigrant in America (one that I have even MORE compassion for after living in a foreign country and realizing how scary it can be), I loved everything about it. It was beautiful.

 

 

3.Yes Please // I can't even begin to tell you how much I loved this book. Let's put it this way. I've already read it twice and underlined most of it. This book will get an entire post to itself.

 

4.Everything I Never Told You // This book broke my heart. It was borderline too sad for me. But it was just so lovely I couldn't stop reading.

 

 

 

{Up Next}

 

1. Revival // Who doesn't love a new Stephen King novel? I got really excited when I saw this on the shelf at my library.

 

2. I Remember Nothing : and Other Reflections  and  I Feel Bad about My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman // It's been a long time since I've read Nora and I need her back in my life.

 

3. Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography // I LOVE NPH. I've heard mixed reviews on this but I still look forward to reading it.

 

And I also have five other books on order from the library. It's a sickness.

Hi Stephanie! I read All The Light We Cannot See in December and was blown away by the writing & the story. It's a thick book, but read quickly once you get started. I just started The Paying Guests since it's a book I recommended for my book club and hope it lives up to all the hype. Have you read any books by Laine Moriarty??? What Alice Forgot, The husband's Secret, & Big Little Lies are really good books that I loved. Thanks for sharing your books!!!

I'm starting All The Light We Cannot See today and I just finished Leaving Time. It was pretty good. It's oneor those books where everything comes together at the end and makes sense. Then you feel like you need to go back and read it again and find the clues you missed! Haha. Thanks for sharing what you're reading!

Listened to "Everything I Never Told You" as an audiobook this past weekend. It was beautiful, and made me pause, but made me so mad... however, I think I may have been upset had it ended any other way.

I just posted my best of list for 2014 today! : ) I'm adding a bunch of these to my Goodreads list. I have been tasked with reading the Celeste Ng book for my book group and I was already kind of dreading it because it sounds so difficult and sad... eeek. I will follow it with Yes, Please which I still haven't read yet!

Nora's books are good on audio, although it makes me a wee bit sad now that she's gone. But she's got such a wry sense of humor that I think her own reading really adds something. I read All the Light I Cannot See in December and *loved* it. I've ordered Yes, Please! from the library and have Station Eleven on my bookshelf, as well as The Book of Strange New Things. I've been reading short things here in early 2015: A book of poetry called Late Wife, which won the Pulitzer, but didn't wow me, Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand (who has become a "comfort author" for me the way Maeve Binchy and Rosamunde Pilcher used to be).

I always enjoy your book posts! I am so glad you enjoyed The Book of Unknown Americans. Cristina is a gifted storyteller and paper crafter! I am currently reading Where'd You Go Bernadette. I am about halfway through and would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. There are parts that I devour and other parts that are a little ho-hum. However, this may be because I started it while on a cruises this Christmas so there were many distractions. I do want to read Unbroken before I see the movie, which means I will probably wait for the DVD to come out. Enjoy your weekend!

Elizabeth, i think the Ng book was sad but also really profound and beautifully written. Not melodramatic either. I thought it was a really worthwhile read.

Station Eleven and Yes, Please are on my to read list. I am reading Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett. It is the last book in his Century trilogy. I really enjoyed the first 2 and this one is great so far.

I am just about to finish The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. It's epic although rather hard to describe. I hesitate to say science fiction but I guess technically it is although it is a bit distopian as well! My favourite book of 2014 was The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. I may biased though as it is set in New Zealand and I had just returned home when I read it!
